DESCRIPTION
4039124 is the Holset HE431V variable-geometry turbocharger used on pre-2010 Cummins ISC 8.3L and ISL 8.9L engines. Unlike the later electric HE431VE, this unit uses an air-operated actuator, which is the quickest way to tell the two generations apart on the truck.
On these ISC and ISL engines a failing HE431V shows as poor low-end boost, smoke on acceleration and an actuator that no longer sweeps its full travel. Because the VGT mechanism and bearings wear together, a replacement turbo is the reliable repair.
